Post-Bariatric Plastic Surgery - Recovery & Results

Post-Bariatric Surgery

The length of your recovery will be determined by the extent of your surgery. Post-bariatric surgery is major surgery; you may need to stay in the hospital for a few days afterwards. Monitoring and regulating your recovery is important for your health and safety.

Immediately following surgery, you will be bandaged, and frequently drains are used to help in your recovery. These drains may need to be in place for up to 7 days or so since the removal of large amounts of excess skin will lead to fluid formation beneath the surface of the skin, which the drains will handle. Sutures are mostly dissolvable, but some will need to be removed about 1 week following surgery. Dr. Romanelli will describe in detail your specific timeline for drain, suture and bandage removals.

Because you will feel even lighter after your excess skin is removed and you will experience a wider range of motion, it is easy to over-exert yourself during the recovery process. This can damage your potential results so it is very important to follow Dr. Romanelli's instructions exactly during your recovery. You will be up and active soon, and your potential results will be enhanced if you allow your body plenty of time to heal.

Because each patient and each post-bariatric surgery on Long Island is unique, every result is different. The surgical removal of excess skin is permanent. Liposuction of fat also permanently removes specific fat cells. Scars are also permanent.

Your body will continue to age normally and this may contribute to normal sagging of the skin, breasts and arms. Fat cells that have not been removed can continue to expand and weight gain is possible if a proper diet and exercise program are not maintained. Taking good care of your skin, eating well, and living a healthy lifestyle will enhance your results.

While you are in the process of making major life changing choices, or if you have already undergone a gastric bypass and are pursuing further positive physical enhancements, you owe yourself the opportunity to discuss your goals with Dr. Romanelli.
