Lip Augmentation on Long Island

During your consultation, Dr. Romanelli will talk to you about your goals and expectations for lip augmentation. Because there are different types of lip injections available on Long Island, each with varying levels of permanence, Dr. Romanelli may discuss a progression of treatments, beginning with the injectable fillers.

Facial fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in the skin. Because they are manufactured pharmaceutically, they do not come from animal or human skin, and so do not require a skin test before treatment. Restylane® is an excellent lip enhancer because it is soft and natural looking. And because effects lasts for 6 months or more, it is a great filler to experiment with prior to engaging in a long-term lip augmentation that cannot be as easily altered.

Facial fillers also injected into the lips using very fine needles. You may experience slight swelling for the first 48 hours. Ice and over the counter medication will diminish both swelling and discomfort. You should be able to return to work or normal social activities within 24 hours.

With fat transfer — a very popular option for lip augmentation on Long Island — excess fat from your own body (abdomen or hips) is removed by minor liposuction and injected into your lips. Since the fat is from your own body, again no skin test is necessary. Fat transfer generally lasts for years, and some of the fat remains permanently.

With fat grafting, your lips will be very swollen at first, and will remain "too large" for up to two weeks. Also, they may feel stiff for up to a month. You should be able to return to work or normal social activities within 10 to 14 days.

Dermal fat grafts are another method to "recycle" your body's own tissue. For many, this is the most permanent lip augmentation available. Skin with fat is harvested from the face during a facelift (or from the abdomen) and surgically placed in the lips. Local anesthesia or a light sedative may be used. With dermal fat grafting the swelling is less, and most patients are presentable at 7 days.
