Silicone Gel Implants
This new generation of silicone implants uses a "cohesive gel" material that holds together for increased safety and a more natural breast feel and appearance. These implants have been thoroughly studied and the FDA continues to monitor their use as part of a post-approval study. Dr. Romanelli, and most of the women he sees considering breast enlargement on Long Island, prefers these cohesive gel silicone gel implants over saline, since silicone looks and feels more like natural breast tissue. At your consultation, you can discuss your questions and concerns with Dr. Romanelli, and get the latest information.
Saline Implants
From 1992 until late 2006, saline implants (those filled with a salt water solution) were the only choice for most U.S. breast augmentation surgeries. Even though saline gel implants are now available and continue to grow in popularity, saline implants still may be a good option for you. For instance, this implant type is less expensive and offers slightly more options for incision site location. In addition, saline remains the only option for primary breast augmentation in women under the age of 22.
Other Considerations
In your breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Romanelli, you will also discuss aspects of breast implants including:
- Size: While a very personal choice, Dr. Romanelli can help you determine the implant size that will achieve your ideal appearance through the use of Axis 3D imaging, which creates an approximation of the results you can achieve with a variety of breast implant sizes.
- Shape: Implants may be either round or teardrop in shape to approximate the natural contour of the breast.
- Profile: Also known as "projection," implant profile determines how far the breast will stick out from the chest wall after surgery. Implants are available in high, medium, or low profile.
- Texture: The shell of an implant may be made using either textured or smooth silicone. Studies have shown that smooth implants are associated with a lower risk of deflation, rippling or wrinkling and Dr. Romanelli has found that this implant type tends to look more natural once placed.
In addition to these considerations, your body shape and amount of existing breast tissue will affect recommended implant width, type, and size. And of course, personal preference also plays a key role. Dr. Romanelli understands that a natural look and the enhanced confidence that can come from breast enhancement helps Long Island women feel their very best. He is a seasoned plastic surgeon who pays attention to the finer details of breast augmentation surgery so that you can achieve a result that remains satisfying for years to come.
