From An A-Cup to a C-Cup--Can Breast Augmentation Help Me?

There are several reasons why more and more women are turning to breast augmentation surgery to enhance their look and feel better about their body. Loss of volume in your breasts after losing weight or after having children is one great reason for enhancing your shape. Many women were born with very little breast tissue or “flat” as you may hear among friends. In some cases, one breast may be uneven or asymmetrical, which is also a concern for many.

All of these reasons are why so many women consider breast augmentation surgery to enhance the size, shape, and look of their breasts. Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures performed today. With the latest technology in breast augmentation surgery offered at Romanelli Plastic Surgery in Long Island, NY our board-certified plastic surgeons can help you feel good again and make you want to grab that bathing suit or rock your tank top during the hot Long Island summers.

What is breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery performed by placing a silicone or saline-filled implant into the breast under the breast tissue or chest muscle to increase the size. There are varying sizes, shapes, and textures to implants which makes the possibilities endless for women wanting this surgery. It not only can improve your self-confidence but also boost your self image. It is one of the many cosmetic procedures available that can shape your body into a better you!

Next steps to consider….

Many women have their own reasons as to why they want breast augmentation surgery. Loss of volume or shape to their breasts due to having children or the aging process are great examples. Some women are born small chested and want larger breasts to help their clothes fit better. Breast implants can even help asymmetrical breasts so you look more proportionate. Whatever your reason is for deciding to take the next step and enhance your breasts with breast augmentation surgery there are factors that go into picking the right breast implant so that you are left with the results you desire.

Size of implant...

The initial consultation is an exciting and very important step for many women considering breast augmentation. An initial consultation with the surgeon allows you to discuss your personal aesthetic goals of size, volume, and overall appearance of your new and improved look. They will also help determine if you want silicone or saline implants, how many CCs it will take to give you the size you want, and discuss placement of where your implants will reside.

When you go into your consultation appointment you can “try” on implant sizes. This is probably the most time-consuming part of the process when considering breast augmentation surgery but also one of the most important ones. During the sizing process, women try on “sizers” which are bead-filled neoprene sacks that can be placed under clothing to get an idea of what size they would prefer. You can visually see for yourself what it will look and feel like going from an A-cup to a C-cup size before the surgery is even performed.

Saline or Silicone…

Outside of what size to choose for your breast enhancement the next step of what type of implant you should choose is the most common question asked by women. Our board-certified plastic surgeons at Romanelli Cosmetic Surgery can help you determine which implant type -- saline or silicone -- is the best choice for you. Silicone implants are filled with a gel type consistency while saline implants require a smaller incision for surgery as the implant shell is inserted first into the breast tissue then filled with a water based filler. Both have their pros and cons to each. 84% of breasts implants used in 2016 were silicone implants due to their more natural look and feel to them but are harder to detect if they should rupture due to the gel type filling. Saline is easier to detect if one should rupture due to shrinking in size over time as it is filled with a mixture of salt and water but they can also have “ripples” in the breasts and not look as natural as its silicone counterpart. With all the advances in technology whichever implant type you choose with your doctor, in the end, is a personal choice in order to make you will feel better about your appearance.

Under the muscle or over...

Another common question asked before breast augmentation is where the surgeon should place the implant for the best end result. An implant can be placed under the pectoral muscle or over it depending on what type of implant you choose, the anatomy of your body, overall sizing, and for aesthetic reasons. While the most common approach is to place the implant under the pectoral muscle, this may not be the case with every patient. Saline implants, for example, have an increased risk of rippling with some patients who may be thinner, so that is something to consider when discussing placement. In order to achieve the best end results, the surgeon will discuss and determine the best option in your consultation.

Breast augmentation recovery is usually about 4-6 weeks and varies by patient. Whether you choose to place the implant on top or underneath the pectoral muscle will determine if your recovery is a little longer as under the muscle can add a couple of weeks to the post surgery recovery. Swelling and decrease in bruising can take up to 6-8 weeks but in most cases by week 6 you can resume normal activities and start seeing visible results of the new you.
