What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly called eyelid surgery or an eyelift lift, is a procedure that rejuvenates the eyelids. Am I a candidate for blepharoplasty in Long Island?

Before your blepharoplasty in Long Island, you will have a detailed consultation to discuss your concerns and medical history, have your skin and eyelids examined, and determine whether you’re an ideal candidate for a blepharoplasty procedure. Candidates meet the following general requirements:

  • Are generally in good health
  • Have no medical conditions, including eye conditions
  • Do not smoke
  • Would like to address sagging eyelids or eye bags and circles
  • Have realistic expectations for what a blepharoplasty procedure can achieve

What happens during the procedure?

Preparing for surgery

Before your procedure, we will ask that you stop taking certain medications that thin the blood. These include aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs, herbal supplements, or any other medication that could interfere with your healing.

We will also ask you to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure and be available to help you the following day after your blepharoplasty.

The surgical procedure

For upper blepharoplasty and an upper eyelid lift, this can be done with local anesthesia. However if you prefer it, your procedure can be done under general anesthesia. All other eyelid surgery and blepharoplasty procedures use general anesthesia. 

Once the procedure begins, an incision is made in the crease of the upper and lower eyelid. To address the upper eyelid, extra skin is removed and the eyelids are tightened so that the skin is no longer sagging. For the lower eyelid, the ligaments of the lower lid are tightened, and fat tissue is repositioned to remove bags or puffiness. The skin of the lower lid is settled newly, creating a youthful, smooth under-eye area. The eyelid incisions are closed with absorbable sutures or biological glues.

Upper blepharoplasty vs lower blepharoplasty

Upper and lower blepharoplasty are two different procedures that can be performed singly or in conjunction with each other.

Upper blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty is performed if you have sagging skin, hooded eyes, excess fat or puffiness on the upper eyelids.

Upper blepharoplasty lifts and reduces the loose skin, and occasionally muscle and fat, on and around the upper eyelids. Using small incisions in the upper eyelid crease, extra tissue is removed while the remaining skin is tightened. Scarring is very minimal. This procedure can be combined with a brow lift, Botox or fillers to further enhance the results.

Lower blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty is performed if you have excess skin, dark circles, puffy pouches or bags under the eyes.

During lower blepharoplasty, the ligaments of the lower eyelid are tightened via a small incision in the inside or outside of the lower lid, and fat is repositioned to eliminate puffy bags or pouches. The lower lid skin is redraped to create a smooth, rejuvenated result. The incision is closed with absorbable sutures or biological glues.

Recovery and results

After your eyelift lift in Long Island, expect swelling and bruising around your eyes. While the swelling and bruising take a couple of weeks to disappear, you can return to work after about one week. 

If you wear contacts, wait for ten days to two weeks before wearing them again. Glasses may be worn the day after your surgery.  Sleep on your back for one to two weeks. Wait for three or four weeks before you exercise again or expose yourself to the sun. 

Once you have healed, you will be able to fully enjoy the results of your blepharoplasty--rejuvenated, youthful, smooth skin under the eyelids and tightened, natural-looking upper eyelids that no longer sag or droop. The area around the eyes will be tighter and smoother, and there will be fewer wrinkles.
